Cannabis sativa. (May 3d 1879 10 P.m) The Cots certainly do not rise, perhaps sinks — The first pair of young leaves which are developed very early do not rise.

May 4th 7° 50 cots. seem flatter, but not all— (May 4th Exposed to light S.W. window with Hypocotyls of 4 seedlings secured to stick at 8° a.m: —at 4°. 45, (bright sun), 2 of the seedlings with, cots. line joining the 2 Cots facing light, had the nearer cot, depressed & further one raised. A third cot seedling had nearer cot. depressed, but further one not raised. The 4th seedling which had its 2 cots transverse to line of light, had them slightly stood so as to face light.— No doubt are heliotropic. The hypocotyl Examine young & old stamen of Berberis is strongly heliotropic, bent at right angles to light: & the cots. on them keep. square. & opposite ones symmetrical—

May 4th 10° 15 P.m. a large number of the cotyledons have now become bowed downwards, so that the apices of some point to ground, with convex surface upwards, but I do not think whole cotyledon is depressed— many seedlings with cots: not in the least curved, & whole lot does not look like sleep.—
