"Beesby, a village in Lincolnshire. 1845 CD bought a farm including 325 acres of land for £13,592 borrowed from his father; rent 1845 £377, 1877 £555 16s. 1845 Sept. CD visited the only time "to see a farm I have purchased". CCD3:258, Keith, Darwin revalued, 1955, p. 222. Atkins 1976, p. 100. Most of that time tenanted by Francis Hardy. 1903 Sold by William Erasmus Darwin (for the Executors of CD, deceased) to the tenant, Edward Ash Young. See Worsley, The Darwin farms, 2017."
"Higgins, John, 1796-1872. Born in Shrewsbury. 1819 Moved to Alford, Lincolnshire, land agent to Robert Waring and Susan Darwin and CD from 1845. H expertly managed and collected rent for CD's farm in Beesby. His papers survive in Lincolnshire Archives (Higgins Deposit) and provide abundant detail. See Worsley, TheDarwin farms, 2017." Memorandum of Agreement made this twenty sixth day of March in the year of the Lord

One thousand eight hundred and forty five, Between James Whiting Yorke of Walmogate House in the County of Lincoln Esquire of the part and Robert Waring Darwin of the Town and county of the Town of Shrewsbury in the County of Salop

Doctor of Medicine of the other part.—

Whereby the said James Whiting Yorke agrees to sell and the said Robert Waring Darwin agrees to purchase for the consideration and on the terms hereinafter mentioned. All that Messuage or Farm House Barn Stables Cottages and the several Closes Pieces or Parcels of Land containing by estimation Three hundred and twenty four acres three roods and twenty five perches more or less situate lying and being in Beesby in the County of Lincoln in the Occupation of Ralph Hardy and others and more particularly described in the schedule hereunto annexed, and the appurtenances thereunto belonging and the freehold and inheritance thereof in Fee simple freed from all charges and incumbrances whatsoever except Land Tax; That the consideration or purchase money shall be Twelve thousand and four hundred Pounds, That the said Robert Waring Darwin shall be entitled to the Rents of the said Hereditaments and Premises from the sixth day of April now next ensuing up to which day inclusively the said James Whiting Yorke shall pay all Taxes Rules and other outgoings for or in respect of the same— That the same James Whiting York shall forthwith deliver to the said Robert Waring Darwin or his solicitor an abstract of the Title to the said Hereditaments and thereby deduce unto the said Robert Waring Darwin a good title thereto in

fee simple. That the conveyance of the said Hereditaments to the said Robert Waring Darwin his heirs and assigns or as he or they may direct shall be execute by all proper parties on the sixth day of April now next ensuing and that upon the delivery thereof to the said Robert Waring Darwin the sum of Twelve thousand and four hundred Pounds the said Purchase Money shall be paid by the said Robert Waring Darwin to the said James Whiting York. That such conveyance shall be prepared and made by and at the costs of the said Robert Waring Darwin but the execution thereof by all other parties than the said Robert Waring Darwin shall be obtained by and at the costs of the said James Whiting York. That the said Robert Waring Darwin shall pay for all attested official or other copies of or extracts from deeds wills or other Documents which he may require. That in the event of the said purchase not being completed on the sixth day of April now next the said Robert Waring Darwin shall pay to the said James Whiting York such proportion of the rent as shall be due at the time of the completion of the purchase.— And the said James Whiting Yorke and Robert Waring Darwin hereby agree that the loss of Interest which may arise to the said James Whiting York in completing the purchase for the convenience of the said Robert Waring Darwin on the 6th day of April next instead of the eleventh day of October next shall be borne and paid by the said parties in equal shares and proportions the said James Whiting Yorke undertaking to use all diligence in placing out his purchase Money. That if any mistake be made in the description of the premises or any error whatsoever shall appear such mistake or error shall not annul the sale, but a compensation or equivalent shall be given or taken as the case any require such compensation to be ascertained by reference in the usual way. Witness the hands of the said parties the day and year first above written.—
