impressed imagined his patients with confidence; & my father used to say that the art of gaining confidence was the chief element in a doctor's worldly success.) (His father brought him to Shrewsbury & introduced him to some of the inhabitants, before he was 21 years old & left him 20 guineas saying "let me know when you want more & I will send it you." His uncle, the rector of Elston afterwards sent him (as I gather from an old letter) 20 & this was the sole the primary assistance aid, which he my father ever received.

I have heard him say that his practice during the first year allowed him to keep two g=horses & a man0servant. His father in a letter at tells in Edgeworth [illeg] in a letter that his son Robert after being settled in Shrewsbury for only six months, "already had between 40 & 50 patients." By the second year he was in considerable & ever afterwards in vy very large practice. I remember his coming into the room one & saying "this day, sixty years ago, I received my first first fee in Shrewsbury." & have continued to practice for two or three years or two longer & [3 words illeg] It may be doubted whether any doctor will ever again get into here a good many have a considerable number of patients before arriving arriving at the age of 21 years. His success as a physician was also the more remarkable, as he for some time detested the
