"Lubbock, Sir John, Bart, 1834 Apr. 30-1913 May 28. First child of Sir John William L. Statesman, banker and man of science. Home: High Elms near Down. L was the closest of CD's younger friends and frequent visitor to Down House from childhood. CD discussed evolution with before Origin. Biography: Hutchinson, Life of Lord Avebury, 2 vols., 1914." My dear Darwin
It is very right that your father should be buried in the Abbey, though individually I should of course have preferred that he should have rested in our quiet little Churchyard at Down, where some day

I should have joined him.
Of course I shall come to the funeral, & shall esteem it an honor to be one of the Pallbearers.
You would have been gratified at the feeling expressed in the House of Commons, & the very general desire that the Dean should assent to our request.
