My dear Darwin,

Allow me to express my deep sympathy with you in your present affliction. Though I never saw your father yet in common with every other scientific man I feel as if I had lost a friend.

I remember reading somewhere a remark of Cuvier's to the effect that natural history would someday have it Newton.

It is the loss of him who fulfilled this prediction that the word now defines
