My dear Darwin,

Suffer me to offer you one word of sympathy in the irreparable loss which you & your family, our country, & the world have sustained. Having met your father in society I can better understand the truth of all that is said of his beauty of character in private as well as his greatness in thought. May I join my hope that you will permit him to be laid in the Abbey. It will hold no nobler nature, no more persistent mind.
