My dear Darwin,
I write these few lines to express my sympathy with you in the sorrow which has come upon you, and my deep sense of the great loss which all us others, and I in particular, have sustained in the death of your Father. Nothing has been more encouraging to me in my attempts to promote and habilitate the study of the Physiology of Plants in this country than the knowledge that he was leading the way and that any efforts which I might make would be sure to obtain his recognition – His memory will, I hope, be to me in the future what his presence amongst us was in the past.

I am extremely sorry that the pressure of my engagements will prevent my being present at the funeral tomorrow – had it been in any way possible I should certainly have made arrangements to go. The College will not, however, be unrepresented, as the Master intends to be present –
