My dear Sir
I beg your pardon for offering to you and your honoured family the marks of my sympathy at the decease of your father. But I do so want to assure you, that his death is to me also a very great loss, because he was such a noble character, and always was so very kind to me. It ever gave me the greatest satisfaction if he would be pleased with what I could offer him of my scientific pursuits.
I take the liberty of sending you a newspaper, in which I wrote a short

article on the extraordinary merits of your father and the place of honour which he takes in the biological science of our day.
I remain, Sir
ever faithfully yours
Hugo deVries.
