(Worms do not appear are to be less as so sensitive to moderate radiant heat than to me as to a bright light. ─ I judge of this from having held a double rod poker heated to a dull redness near to five worms, at such a distance which [illeg] that a very sensible degree of warmth was felt by to my hand, one of the five worms took no notice; a second withdrew into its burrow but not very quickly; the third & fourth much more quickly & the fifth with vy as rapidly as possible. The light from a candle concentrated by a lens generally a much more rapid [illeg] retreat.)

(Worms have no do not possess any [illeg] sense of hearing. They took not the least of the slight notice when a metal-whistle [illeg] was supposedly or slightly sounded near them, nor of the (loudest) & (deepest) tunes of a bassoon. They were indifferent to shouts, care being taken that the breath did not strike them. When placed on a table close to the Keys of a piano-forte, which was played as loudly as possible, they remained perfectly quiet quiet.─)
