CRIPP'S CORNER, FOREST ROW, SUSSEX.

Dear Mr Howarth,

I have been writing to Mr. Inge and Sir Buckston Browne about the sermon preached by the Bishop of Carlisle at my fathers death, and saying that it seems to me that it would be a good plan if it were published next April in the Times, that is 50 years after my father's death. I understand that they both agree, and I think that Sir Buckston-Browne intends to speak to you on the subject. I suggest

that the letter to the Times would carry most weight if it comes officially from the British Assoc.

Unless my memory plays me false, the letters I sent you contained some reference to the Archbishop of Canterbury having passed on this duty to the Bishop almost at the last moment. If so I feel rather strongly that it would be unwise to make any reference to this fact. All that need be said is that the Dean of Westminster was ill, and partly in consequence of this fact, the Bishop got very little warning.

What I want is that it should be known that the Church was very broad minded on the occasion.

Yours sincerely

L. Darwin.
