Lythrum hyssopifolium: fresh flowers Kew Sept 5 — 62

6 petals & calyx with 12 divisions, just as in L. salicaria.

8 or 6 stamens, of unequal graduated length.— The longer ones correspond with short divisions of calyx — the shorter ones with long divisions of calyx ie with true homological divisions of sepals — style short— pistil stigma on level with crown of longer corolla stamens & all included within calyx

[Left margin:] Apparently would always fertilise itself

I could see no difference in size of the two pollens. Hence both sets of stamens are present.—

[Right margin:] 4. Specimen Examined

/ over

Lythrum pubescens mid-styled

― acuminatum short-styled {apparently but imperfect

These are perhaps vars. of L. salicaria.—

[17v]

One flower with 9 stamens, the 3 missing ones, are the [illeg] & face the longer division of calyx or true sepals another flower with 8 stamens, again the short ones aborted — So we may trust this as rule — It is the inner whorl of stamens
