Darwin cited Dolomieu in Geological observations on the volcanic islands and parts of South America visited during the voyage of H.M.S. 'Beagle', p. 29, n1: "Spallanzani, Dolomieu and Hoffman have described similar cases in the Italian volcanic islands. Dolomieu says the iron at the Panza Islands is redeposited in the form of veins (p. 86, 'Mémoire sur les Isles Ponces'). These authors likewise believe that the steam deposits silica: it is now experimentally known that vapour of a high temperature is able to dissolve silica."

Dolomieu says in the lava. –
"Le fer. qui les coloroit, lorsqu'il n' a point été mis en état de vitriol martial, et emporté par les eaux, ou qu'il a été abardonnéz par son dissolvent se rassemble et forme des veines rouges et jaunes, qui travesent les masses d'argile blanche; il y produit des incrustations plus ou moins épaisses, et

absolument semblables à la mine de fer limoneuse; la partie calcaire se changes en gypse; l'argile produit de l' alun, et la substance filicée se rassemble, & forme des quartz gras & des calcédoines."
