* When we see a dike projecting upwards from the weathering away of the surrounding soft strata, we feel nevertheless sure that it must once have had walls, so is it on a grander wall with the view of a mountain chain. The difficulty consists in anyhow finding extent of matter sufficient to form the walls for the great mountain dike, excepting by the expansion of its own solidified crust.
