On Elevation of West Indies

near the Peaks of Bab-el-Mandeb: these parts I have coloured red. Undoubtedly the coast both of the mainland & inland in the more northern & interior of the Red Sea are skirted for considerable lengths with equal regulating as the southern pieces; but there are likewise these reefs extending parallel to the shore with deep water within: these parts, therefore, I have left uncoloured. In an appendix I shall give a brief account of the view taken by Ehrenberg of their reef, namely that they are submarine bases of islands only coated & protected by living coral: I shall also then add a few remarks on the extremely singular form of islands, in the Red Sea & I hope to succeed in showing, that there is an anomaly in the juxtaposition of fringing reef, with those others which apparently come under the Barrier class. I will have only add that Ehrenberg has observed that there are no lagoons or atoll-formed islands in the Red Sea which remarks I can confirm by an examination of the large charts.

The coast of Africa outside the Str. of Babel-mandeb, in front of the S. shore of Arabia appears clear of all reefs. ?? in former page
