Vol I. p. 132, Lyell on subterranean disturbances appearing to be indexed by volcanic outbursts.

Macclelland p. 43 is the Report on th Coal mines of India - describes some case of intermediate spots being little affected - during great earthquakes.

[Darwin cited this in On the connexion of certain volcanic phenomena in South America; and on the formation of mountain chains and volcanos, as the effect of the same powers by which continents are elevated. [Read 7 March] Transactions of the Geological Society of London (Ser. 2) 5 (3): 601-631, pl. 49, 3 figs., p. 606, n: "§ Another instance of earthquakes, violently affecting distant regions and passing over the intermediate country, is mentioned in the "True relation of the Earthquake of Lima, 1746."5 It is there said (p. 192) that the shock was most violent at Lima and Callao, becoming gradually less along the coast, but that at Guancavelica excessive shocks were felt and noises heard. The editor believes, there is no other place called Guancavelica except the famous quicksilver mines of that name, situated 155 miles to the S.E. of Lima. MacClelland (Report on the Coal Mines of India, p. 43,) 6 mentions some cases of intermediate places being little shaken during great earthquakes."]
