In 1821 partial & local shock at Coquimbo

November 4 & 5th violent earthquake affecting Copiapo and Coquimbo.

19th the famous one of Valparaiso.

(Rise on coast 2- 4 ft. at a mile inland 5 or 6 ft. for a fall of 14 inches gained in 100 yards.)

Effects on Santiago, Aconcagua similar, even less at Melipilla - at Valdivia single shock at moment of shock two volcanos suddenly burst out with great noise and suddenly resumed their quiescent state. (Extent of Earthquake 900 miles from Copiapo to Valdivia)

The greatest force of Earthquake 15 miles NE of Valparaiso

North of Valparaiso shock though SW, South of do NW. Most persons thought shock from seaward.

Does not appear earthquake extended into the mountains of the Andes; excepting at Valdivia

During earthquake, sea retired & returned several times but without so much violence as might have been expected.
