[209]

The NW coast of St. Helena by Capt. Austin is a very valuable document. - a line of from 5 to 6 fathoms rocky ground - & then gradually sounding with chains of depths, to which could be added some greater depths from great chart of St. Helena.

Mem. soundings given at Ascension. - Rocky Flats.

NB. The subsidence must have been as great as depth of water at outer supposed

limit of strata.

[209v]

Whenever from height of cliffs & planes of stratification it may be inferred that the mass extended to seaward, beyond the line, where there is now 15? or 20? or 30? fathoms deep, subsidence may be deduced as certain.

Moreover as form of land does not occur often in nature, which would result from stationary land we may conclude when land not rising it is sinking.
