S. 40 In young shoots the position of leaves, or angle, often different from in mature stems

S. 41. Leaves sometimes in whorl below & spiral above & reverse; also under in abnormal circumstances change from one to another.

,42 young leaf-buds vary as much as 10° either above or below their proper angle of divergence; supposes at earliest formation, before distinguishable are never regular.—

45 The position of Spiral vessels to a certain extent independent of position of leaves
