Proc. Asiatic Soc of Bengal. May 1868. Lieut. Johnstone describes the elephants of India, several distinct races, but in each area occasionally one may be seen resembling those proper to another area. In Central India there is a very distinct race or species with 14 false ribs (instead of 13) as in the Borneo & Ceylon species.

Many facts about age of breeding & number of young produced.
