Aug 29 — 1869

Asa Gray says that in Lilium superbum & Canadense are inclined the leaves in middle are verticillate or approaching it in middle arrangement of leaves in middle of stems & a & spherical or alternate arranged above & below.

In L. lancifolium I saw leaves alternate over summit of stems & spiral in lower part.—

Magnolia stamens spiral, flower petals verticillate

Camellia calyx spiral of petals verticillate —so evidently an early transition from between two state
