Forbes has thought about variability, being effect of conditions: he thinks a critical genus (i.e a variable one) is at all times & places variable.

Ch 4

Remark that all creatures most useful to man the most variable — (& not effect of domestication & he objected with oysters to my view of their use depending on capacity to undergo much change. (but the Bee is good case of very slight cariability. of most useful animal.).
