Naturæ convenit, ut quo magis versus austrum procedamus, eo magis luxuriet vegetatio, et eo magis singulæ species in varietates dilabantúr, quæ demum formam magis fixam totidem specierum assumunt. Schleiden, on the other hand, speaks I remember of alpine plant being more variable than lowland. ─ H. C. Watson says alpine more numerous, than arctic, so that latter may be said to be a part of Arctic Alpine─

When Arctic regions existed at foot of Alps there was more arctic country, & therefore more species, which have reassured [illeg]

Herbert suspects that variation produced by staring produces more fixed varieties than luxuriance.─

Peacocks green Fowls, Donkeys not varying may be owing to want of favourable condition.
