Dr. Falconer shows in very interesting manner in his Report on the Teak Forests of Tenasserim 1852 p. 30. how how many contingencies the preservation of these forests depend, when attacked by man. The teak produces a prodigious supply of good seed, which retain their vitality for 2 years; but they are easily washed away, & when they do germinate are attacked by animals — When man adds to the natural difficulties fires the cutting down the old trees, the Teak is exterminated: whereas the Saul-tree, from producing seeds which germinate immediately, can be attacked by man to any extent (I doubt whether worth giving)
