[A3]

March 15 1855 Casual notes on my collection of seeds.

Certainly Peas, Beans & Kidneys differ more than any other seeds & they are selected for seeds.

Chenopodeæ differ greatly but then this character of Family or at least of Atriplex. The several species of Clover make me suppose the Leguminosæ not particularly apt to differ.—

Plants with one seed as nuts, walnuts (?) Plums especially.— Cherry (?) vary very much & they are selected for seed or at least for outer covering of.— I think apples & Pears vary less yet fruit ought to have same relation, I shd have thought to seed. ⸮ are not apples calyx or stem (as Hooker says) enlarged. & is not plum the very outside of seed itself.—

In corns I suspect selection made a good deal from appearance of ear.—

[A4]

It is wonderful how little all plants cultivated for leaves or roots, more especially cabbages how little the seeds differ. Contrast flowers of cabbage with florist flowers.

{I do not doubt some difference goes through the whole of a species from seed to entire plant.—
