After watching 14 days, many times every day. many clumps of heartseases, never saw any Bee go to them. Yesterday remarked that many flowers had suddenly withered, & to day saw very odd dusky humble (with pollen) on legs go from clump to clump, & insect proboscis in many flowers, on one of which pollen was routed, wh. was not case, on several flowers I examined some days ago — This Bee flew from yellow to yellow & purple heartease without doubt. —

Bee, not large, very dusky & broad never saw such a one before —

Saw Fly 21 this Heartease withered on Monday. — alight on upper petals & insert proboscis, under stigma & draw it out over & over again & wipe off pollen, (as a needle becomes

covered) so whole sides of flower & stigma dusted.— I think When it first alighted, it cleaned sucker & I think pollen was scraped off, which appeared like Heartease pollen. — the pollen appeared chaffy, as if sucked?! opens & shuts end of sucker, after having withdrawn it. — Saw 4 more Bees at work — another odd genus — & a small common Humble — & more of same fly

Two more of the flowers withered.—
