Sept. 30/65/ Utilitarianism Nat. Selection

After Birds & Butterflies beauty.— What more beautiful to man than flowers or more delightful than their odour yet we may safely argue, from wind-fertilized— And case of Viola &c that for guide to insects— so perfume, for white or dusky flowers are visited by night Lepidoptera?

What more beautiful than berries of Holly, Yew or Hawthorn or Strawberries — yet of highest use we may infer, as all berries, which or seed enveloped or embedded in with pulp, which are attractive to Birds for dissemination, are bright or black or case & so conspicuous. — Curious analogy as some insects search for pollen & so fertilise flower so acorn—apples, Pears, &c perhaps from pips on quadrupeds.— small seeds by wind, analogous to pollen by wind

[Left margin:] Seeds themselves not generally coloured brightly.—
