Nov- 5/65/ (Beauty)

In the whole round of nature, nothing more capricious or more beautifully coloured than many exotic orchids, yet the extraordinary protuberances on the labellum are merely baits for insects & other parts guides for their approach, & so with the colour.—For with all flowers, these beautiful colours & perfumes are merely attraction for insects— proof of violets &c.— What more beautiful than the Christmas glories of the Holly & many beautiful berries— partly to attract Birds for dissemination — Sometimes covering as in the Ø

Spindle-wood & Passiflora gracilis are beautiful as well as seed — or inside of seed-capsules is in certain peonies.— just as stipules or corolla are beautiful to render some flowers more attractive — As butterflies make each other beautiful by sexual selection, may they not give special beauty to flower when honey abounds? Too Powerful — How are sexes in Diptera.
