Salmonia p. 50— Large Trout in some waters & small in others.

Ova of same size & time of spawning same; but in small trout rarely 40, in the large ones tens of thousands "so that their production is diminished as their food is in small quantity".— The small breeds are assumed with probability to result from small quantity of food. Yet 40 eggs wd increase the breed infinitely!—

["Sept 14t Salmonia [1843], 'Books to be read / Books Read' notebook. Text CUL-DAR119.-. An angler. (Humphry Davy). 1828. Salmonia: Or, Days of Fly Fishing, in a series of Conversations; with some account of the habits of fishes belonging to the genus Salmo. London]

p. 97 Ch .3

Put as note to where I discuss whether rate of increase depends on number of eggs — allude to Chapter 3 on domestic vegetable — I do not doubt in some cases in proportion to size of Plants more seed in starved Plants.
