— 5 Ch. 6. (vars not crossing)

Linn. Trans. vol XIV. p. 163. Rev R. Sheppard, on land & F. W. shells of Suffolk.— Helix nemoralis occurs without, with one, & with several dark bands following the volutions

He has observed them repeatedly in copulation at Walton, where they had by hundreds. & constantly the plain-sort was joined to the plain,— The one-banded to do— — the many banded to do. — — Moreover the spicula from the one & many-band differ in form.— Yet it has been asserted they have been produced from one deposit of eggs. He suspects many snails may lay in one place.— It is clear no difference of forms— for he does not venture to publish them as distinct species, though named in his own cabinet — Helix hortensis can be divided into — plain, one- & many-banded, but knows nothing of their amours or spicula.—

p. 167. Helix fossaria has a curious whitish variety & another with more oblique volutions than usual

p. 168. Helix limosa, is frequently found with 5 volutions. — also a curious variety with margin extremely dilated.— Helix auricularia — has a dwarf variety — also 2 other varieties one with with inside purplish — other delicate silvery white with margin considerably dilated.— — There seem to be many var's in these land. & F. W. shells. —
