&c together with some selection, together with some crossing and the transportal of races of their native country, account for their diversity; if not my view will easily admit that the different races of dogs may have descended fr different species, but this involves the assumption unsupported by any fact, that species fr the effects of domestication become perfectly prolific together.

Page 83. Dr A. argues at gt length that the different races of dogs must have been created distinct argues from the permanence of breeds even when transported from country to country, says the supposition that all the different breeds have descended from a common stock, are as absurd as the Metamorphosis of Ovid supposes (P. 88) the breeds were kept distinct in a wild state by the difference of their habits how curious this belief is when this author (Page 92) himself argues that whenever a male & female possessed of the same kind of peculiarity, a distinct & hereditary breed may be formed.— in another part he shews that the thick wooled sheep wd naturally be preferred in the colder countries & thus accounts for their presence there.— (P. 142) (think over origin of breeds of Dogs does their present distinctness depend on their antiquity) Mem. Greyhounds in Ancient Egypt Mem. even Savages take pains in improving their breeds in Guiana.— would not the unavoidable effects of climate
