[A16]
Horse-chesnut from Ld Cranworth Park. May 23. 1860
One truss – 87 flowers
second 177
third 158
fourth 185
say 150 on average.
From Down. 140 rather small truss
do 188 fine truss.
I examined flowers from 6 different trees of Holwood & in all it was clear that many male flowers considerably open before females & so lose their pollen uselessly.
I examined tissues of flowers from high up tree at Down & same arrangement, all anthers in some cases had shed pollen before pistils protruded on the truss.
May 23d I conclude I may say a multitude of male flowers produced uselessly, at least the greater number of anthers of such flowers are produced uselessly - Better say a vast amount of pollen wasted.
Hooker says he has looked & confirms my account Same in Maple.
[16v]
After careful examination I may say no difference in pollen of Hermaphrodite & male flowers.
