J. Lowe. 1860. A peculiar variety of the honey bee. Cottage Gardener and country gentleman, vol. 24 (15 May): 110.

[A40]

Cottage Gardener 1860. p. 110. Mr J. Lowe of Edinburgh describes a peculiar var. of Honey Bee, procured in 1857 from a Cottager near Edinburgh history unknown. "The hairs covering both the worker & the Queen being much more profuse & light-coloured than in the ordinary bee, especially those which cover the head & thorax. The queen moreover is large, the characteristics before stated being more decidedly conspicuous in her case; whilst the amount of golden colour which generally distinguishes her is also more brilliant" "I raised artificial queens frm this stock & find that the distinction in th offspring is kept up & sufficiently marked to be easily identified." I can even identify it in the field and among a crowd of other Bees.

Ch 8

[A40v]

We thus see a variation transmitted to all all neuter descendants - this alternative I have neglected - For generally the var. would affect some alone - & then might prevail.
