Dichogamy

June 16 /72/

Looked at premature flowers, one in about middle of each sub-head of Sweet-William, & found fl. exclusively ♂ stamens mere rudiments - one fl., however, had 2 nearly perfect stamens. Stamens now of little use - yet their early flowers on same tuft or on adjoining plants might have partially fertilised each other. Is not case like that of Carrot & peloric Pelargoniums (?) due to some law of development of central flower - If we cd see on a Proterogynous plant - Pistils aborted case wd be stronger.
