NOTE: Darwin mentions to Syms Covington (22 February 1857) that he "lately dined" with Sir W. Macarthur. He wrote to Asa Gray (15 March 1857) and Hooker (12 January 1858). He also cited Macarthur's observation in the Gardeners' Chronicle, (13 November 1858).

Sir W MacArthur tells me he made Erythrina hybrid – That Erythrina will not seed freely without each flower be [illeg] so that pollen are forced out

Fewer hybrids can be made here without [castration] as he has affected.

The Hybrid Erythrina quite sterile.
