Aug 29th Southampton: found field with Red Clover, which seemed to have been cut repeatedly.

Saw only few Humble-bees, & many Hive-bees sucking at mouth of flower!! & taken at base of clover, but these were not bitten!!!

[in margin:] William saw Humble Bees calling [Holer]

Aug 30 In another field saw Hive-bees sucking very many of [the] closer have well-developed Heads. I watched certain Bees visit many flowers, as many as a dozen flowers & not suck much; but search at base of corolla I gathered 5 of these flowers, on which stopped some time & on all found Bitten →
