1. Rhodod. maximum – a white one N. American

Unhealthy tree- Anther shrivelled in mature flower de… under water several anthers, bring only 3 pollen grains in several anthers!! In unopened flower there is in mouth or orifice of real (of short & long stamens) much shrivelled anther, a little pollen, that [covering] together. This pollen is present both in the anthers of nectary & long stamens.

The anthers lower of flower but above half size of latter.

Stigma in the Rhododendron is of bright red, not gummy in early stages of flower or indeed in any, I saw. The red part surrounded by white border, as if red mamillated part had not been sufficiently developed.

The pollen left in water for five minutes seem to remain unchanged; examined them with 1/10 lens each grain seem to contain brown matter but their nucleus was not separated from outer case by [close?] space, because Ipomoea had not swelled (from immaturity?)

As far as I could judge from few latter flowers of R. alga…., this is equally thick in pollen, & likewise a pink Rhod whose name is unknown

Nn Kalmia from Camp Hill – plants of pollen. Stamens bowed down by corolla, when let free by [illeg] sprang up & jerks out plenty of pollen, which might waft to neighbouring stigmas

The Rhod. Ferrugineum (an alpine S… plant) has plenty of pollen & filled anthers – not monstrous

Dec. momogy – at Maer. The upper stamen alone is generally shorter, & anther a little smaller than those of larger stamens but equally plump even in flower sometimes opened.

Shrewsbury July 2d / 41/

Rhod. arboretum all Decand & momogy. a g…. tree pat out of [illeg] in [illeg].

from India – anthers rounded even of short nectar one, abounding with pollen; more than in any Rhod I have seen.
