Kidney Beans

In flower in Bottle by moving wings (united at base to keel) the stigma is protruded & by hairs the pollen is pushed on to summit.

Hive Bees occasionally go right over keel & not on left wing.

Honey lies abundantly in tube of united anthers, they go to left because easiest course owing to right bulging side to slit where they have to insert probosis. The right side of head is pushed against protruding stigma. They do not much move wing-petals, but Humbles I am sure must do so. Pollen shed in unopened flowers, by moving wings then stigma protruded very [hurried] I opened several & I must doubt whether pollen cd get on stigma, certainly only on posterior portion. (Some little pollen on Hive Bees. Considerable on front legs & side of Head as a Bee rather larger than Hive.

Aug about 10th enclosed 3 or 4 flowers, each in Bottle with petticoat; one bottle I never touched, the others I took out for 1/2 minute daily & just moved wings petal backwards & forwards & saw pollen worked on stigma.

Aug 24th In these latter 3 pods set as not touched ones all shanked off, one having tried to set a pod. (In Lathyrus grandifloras I move wings of 4 flowers, & then subsequent 4 others in each one set & produced fine pod - at times first not one other pod set, subsequently some set, but were so fine as

(Aug 25. I find by blowing with tube cd hardly or not at all depress wings. The pollen coheres so the hairs blown off with great difficulty, & concealed in stigma in & protected by Petal I think wind could have extremely little effect.) I found on rt. leg of Bombus muscorum a good deal of Pollen

(Aug 26th put 2 flowers in Bottles & 2 under gauze & will daily move the further pair: all 4 shanked off perhaps I did not soon enough move wings.)

Sept put two in Bottle, those that were not touched both shanked off in other one set. Put 2 under gauze & forgot & I moved both; in one both shanked off, in other both set (But it is getting late, yet the pods, I find do yet set.) (Upon the whole though some? both ways failed - yet in 2 Bottle cases, those moved set & those that do not set nothing.
