Haeckel conclude that:

The developement of the pieces into which the segmented ovum is divided is slower the smaller the piece is. "The larva developed from each piece is more imperfect & inclined more to monstrosity the smaller such piece is."

In one experiment in which the egg was trisected two of the bits were of equal size, yet did not develope in ten days into similar larvae: this looks as if position had somethg to do with it but Häckel says nothing abt it.
