(Acids)

(I will as in the case of the salts first give a list of the 24 acids which were tried, divided into two unequal series according as they cause inflection either strong, or moderate, or no inflection. I will then give my experiments & make a few concluding remarks.

Nitric acid: four leaves were placed each in 30 [illeg] of 1 part to 437 of water, & this strength was chosen in this & other cases, as corresponding to the strength of most of the foregoing saline solution. After 2h 30m some of the leaves were much inflected; & after 6h 30m all were immensely inflected, as well as the laminæ. The surrounding fluid was slightly coloured pink. They were then placed in pure water & remained inflected for three days & were evidently killed; most of the glands were colourless.
