Nov. 24/72/ Thinking over Spectator's remark, puppy feels no doubt affection before it experience it – Probably old dog may use to explain affection but chief cause I believe to be generated nerve-[fibre] which by the by expended & [illeg] determine the notion of expression.

I certainly think I have much understood which to show or express affection. – Cats show when they derive

some coveted object, their affection to these [illeg] by arching their back &c. –Dogs regard man much more than fellow dogs & they show by outward sign much more affection to former than to latter, yet undoubtedly they feel strong affection to other dogs.
