No doubt stags challenge each other to mortal combat by their bellowing; but it is not likely that this could have led, through the success during many generations of the loudest-voiced males, to the periodical enlargement of the throat; for the stags with the more powerful voices, unless at the same time more powerful in other respects, would not have gained any advantage over their rivals; & the stags with weaker voices, would have been drawn to the place of combat as certainly as those with stronger voices.
