separated into 2 lots of heavier & lighter seeds; & many of the former certainly germinated first. It is evident that my own observations are necessary before anything can be decided with respect to the relative period of germination of crossed & self-fertilised seeds.)

Chapter D

of these seeds an equal number were weighed on several occasions & generally those produced by the crossed flowers were the heaviest; as might perhaps have been expected. * (1) (Back)

In several instances however the reverse occurred and this appeared due to only a few having been produced by the self-fertilised flower, [line excised]
