After my return to England it seemed to me that by following the example of L in G, & collecting all facts which bore in one way on the variation of pl. & an. under domestication & nature, some light might perhaps be thrown on the whole subject. My first note-book was opened in July 1837. I worked on this B. P. & [alter] anything [insertion?] collected facts on a great scale, more especially with respect to domesticated production, by printed enquiries, by conversation with breeder of all kinds, & skilled gardeners, & by extensive reading. When I see the list of books when I started, consisting of all kind of opera & Tracts, I am surprised at my industry
