July 4th /74/ Put leaves in infusion of raw meat

2nd at 11° 15' — Next morning at 10° some aggregation down to very base & across bending place— Then placed them after washing in pure water — Now July 4th 8° there is no trace of aggregation in the tentacles still inflected near bases & at bending place, but only near under glands— so redissolution does certainly begin at base & travel upwards & is independent of reexpansion. In several of those still Ø

inflected tentacles the dorsal or lower surface far redder than concave surface, but this does not exist or cannot be seen in the very red. spec.—

(Some leaves placed in C. of Ammon (2 gr. to 1 oz) & placed in water at about same time. have still (4th) innumerable spheres down to very base & are still inflected. — (Spheres in cells in whole lamina of leaf. movement??)

July 5. The leaf in C. of Am too much injured & cut up for any dissolution of black protoplasm. I see little points blackened on front & back of leaf & footstalk— Even the hairs show aggregation on footstalk, so I think the little points are rudiments of Hairs, with leaves, more power of absorption.—

The main function, if any, of Hair cannot be absorption.
