Ch. 2 [amount] of mould but very common near square yard – nearly level mould only 3 to 4 inches thick. On terrace near sq yard 3 3/4 inch.

There is reason to believe that the Terraces were formed about 150 years ago. So only 4 inches of fine mould accumulated in those times – at first very slow – but the Terraces is of course move by many mediums or [illeg] & occasionally swept when the leaves are falling & thus some amount of the castings are removed, yet this hardly accounts for the vegetable mould being only 4 inches thick
