The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. July 18 / 77 8˚ Am. Leek

Two youngish flower-peduncles removed bloom with sponge & tied sponge with gutta percha round both.

Bloom beautiful. —

(July 23' after long moderately hard rain I see peduncles are quite dry except where bloom has been accidentally rubbed off).

July 28th. 8˚ took off sponge no effect whatever— marked stalks white wool.

I looked again after a week or two & no effect & then removed bloom from whole peduncle

Aug 27th To my surprise found a distinct mark, where sponges had been viz slight yellowish & mottled
