The volume CUL-DAR66 contains notes on 'bloom'. Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. He amassed a quantity of notes on the subject". LL3: 339. See an Introduction to these folders by Christine Chua & John van Wyhe.

Aug 2d. 2˚ 30' Common Gilliflower (see former paper)

12 green pods not touched & 12 of same age, (latter alternating with last) sponged with tepid water & then placed on blotting paper, & both lots on same plate often syringed.—

Aug 21st The rubbed pods manifestly smelt worse.

22 The rubbed slightly yellower

23d ― certainly more discoloured

25' ― do. do— thrown away.

Aug 9th 11˚ 30 5 pods not touch & 5 sponged &c left to dry.

Aug 11th 8˚ The rubbed pods paler coloured & dryer.

Aug 12 I am doubtful about dryness — colour goes for nothing depends on hairs all projecting one way — No difference

Aug 14th I think the rubbed rather drier— hardly any difference

Growing Plant (over)

[132v]

Aug 2d 2˚ 30' cleaned in same manner 6 pods on growing plant — marked white wool — Experiment partly failed — cd perceive no difference
