Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Grapes 1877

Just beginning to be purple & quite hard— Bloom not very perfect, but look moderately silvery in water, surface however still repellent

5 cleaned & uncleaned syringed often

Oct. 25. one of each lot decayed & mouldy

Oct 29. all 4 of those with bloom mouldy — 1 of the cleaned mouldy — not much difference, but support former conclusion.

Aug 3d 11˚ 4 cleaned & uncleaned left to dry.

― 15' a trace of more shriveling round peduncle of cleaned ones.

16 all 4 cleaned a trace if shriveling round stalk, only 1 of them with bloom

Aug. 16' 9˚ A. m. — grapes now rather riper & dark purple cleaned 7 & left 8 with bloom on, & put in sun to dry

24 several of cleaned & uncleaned a little wrinkled

27' no difference between the 2 lots

30' I think the cleaned rather more wrinkled.

Sept I 8˚ Cut one of each into twain no difference in colour of juices or in tastes.)

Sept 4th the c more of the cleaned collapsed

Sept 8th The cleaned ones seem rather more collapsed

Feb. 15th [illeg] 1878 — now nearly as dry as raisins, & there is no difference in to the 2 lost, so threw away. —
