Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Young quite flat, but most nearly full length — Beautifully silvery.

5 cleaned & uncleaned to be syringed

Sept 12th not much hardly any difference, if any those with bloom the more decayed of the 2 lots.

5 cleaned 4 uncleaned to be left to dry. —

19th The smaller cleaned ones feel dryer

25 very little or no difference between 2 lots

Sept 1' no clear difference between the 2 lots, thrown away

I cleaned a lot of Peas of bloom & left then on plants, but several were destroyed by birds, before being netted — What remained were gathered on Sept 10th 3 pods were quite small & shrivelled, but then there were such which had not been cleaned — These 4 fine pods which had been cleaned, these differed very little or perhaps not at all from the others, excepting that perhaps they looked rather more shrunk, so the peas within were rather more plainly shrunk from the outside. —
