Francis Darwin explained: "His researches into the meaning of the 'bloom,' or waxy coating found on many leaves, was one of those inquiries which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Aug 4. 11˚ 30'

4 quite young pods rubbed with sponge in tepid water & 4 not touched to be syringed

(Surface covering with long curved smooth hairs & many shorter, hooked or straight.) Very young Pods moderately silvery when submerged.

Sept. 13th 3 of the cleaned utterly decyed the 4th & largest still considerably green, but flaccid.

Of those which had not been rubbed 2 utterly decayed

2 quite green & much more rigid than one green one, which had been rubbed.— I think had produced some effect.

Aug 4. 11˚ 30 3 rubbed & 3 not touched left to dry

Aug 8' 8˚ I think rubbed dryer & browner.

Aug 12th the rubbed are certainly more shrunk & shriveled, & p bean within shown more plainly — 14th do

Aug. 9th 11˚ 30' — 5 pods sponged & 5 not of equal size & ages sp left to dry.

Aug 13' 8˚ A.m — all the smaller ones more shrunk & dryer

― 14th The beans within show much plainer & certainly pods more shrunk.
